WALK & TALK

What is Walk & Talk therapy?

This is a 50-minute walking therapy session.  We meet at a designated outdoor location in San Francisco where we walk while discussing issues that are significant for you. My approach is supportive, proactive and solution-focused.

Why might this be better for me than traditional in-office therapy?

Walk & Talk clients can experience the benefits of therapy, physical activity and nature simultaneously!

Studies indicate that exercise promotes release of neurotransmitters associated with improved mood.  Additionally, there are documented health benefits of being in nature including increased confidence, tranquility and sense of well-being. Participating in a Walk & Talk therapy session may be more appealing to some than sitting in an office for a traditional therapy session.

For many clients who live/work in an urban environment, the opportunity to be active and outdoors is a way to feel more relaxed and joined with nature.  Overall, I find that Walk & Talk therapy can be used as a way to help my clients reconnect mind, body and spirit.

Can anyone do Walk and Talk?

Your needs and options will be discussed during the initial evaluation session in my office. I have found most of my clients who are interested in participating in Walk & Talk therapy have been able to do so.  I have conducted Walk & Talk therapy sessions with a wide range of clients including teens, new moms (who bring their infants in the stroller), elderly and individuals who appreciate the opportunity to integrate therapy/outdoors/exercise into their busy schedules.

However, you must consult a physician before beginning in order to be sure this program is a good fit for both your mind and body.

What should I expect during the session?

Sessions vary in topics and are based on the therapy goals we discuss in your initial evaluation. Should the conversation get particularly difficult or if you need a break, we may sit for a while. Sessions are tailored toward your needs.

Walk & Talk sessions are conducted on paths through various outdoor spaces in San Francisco.

What if it is raining? And what should I wear?

In the case of rainy weather, we may grab our umbrellas and walk anyway, or we can meet at my office for our session. Wear clothing that is comfortable for you, most importantly, walking/tennis shoes.

What if someone sees or hears us?

Although confidentiality is protected as much as possible, the nature of being in public poses certain confidentiality risks. We may need to slow down or speed up our pace at times, or change our route altogether. If someone we know approaches us, we may avoid introductions and politely excuse ourselves from the conversation. This has not been an issue in my experience, but we should always be prepared with an exit plan. We will discuss this plan further in our initial session.

What are typical appointment times?

Appointments are based upon availability.  I will work with you to try to make this time as convenient as possible.  Some clients choose a session before work, while others choose a time during their lunch hour or after work.

Is this a cardio workout?

The emphasis in Walk & Talk therapy is on the therapy, the walking is a secondary benefit. We walk at your pace. You should not expect an extremely strenuous workout or any sort of personal training.
